A devastating military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, has reportedly claimed the lives of several high-ranking Ghanaian government officials.
Among those confirmed dead are the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. Also perishing in the crash were Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former Member of Parliament; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a presidential staffer.
The Ghana Armed Forces has also confirmed the deaths of all three crew members on board: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
According to initial reports, the victims were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter on a flight to Obuasi when the aircraft lost radar contact shortly after takeoff on Wednesday morning. The helicopter was carrying a total of eight individuals—five passengers and three crew members.
Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to the crash site. Graphic images and footage obtained by MX24 News showed the charred remains of some victims, though authorities have yet to release a full official list of those killed or injured.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who was attending an anti-illegal mining event at the time, reportedly abandoned the programme and rushed to the scene upon hearing of the tragedy.
In a brief statement, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that recovery operations are ongoing and investigations have commenced to determine the cause of the crash. So far, no explanation has been provided.
This tragic incident comes just over a year after a military helicopter crash-landed near Bonsukrom in the Western Region on March 19, 2024—a crash that, unlike this one, resulted in no fatalities.
Further updates are expected as investigations progress and families of the deceased are notified.
