Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to lift the Community Shield after an entertaining 2-2 draw at Wembley Stadium.
Liverpool twice took the lead, with Hugo Ekitike opening the scoring in the 4th minute and Jeremie Frimpong adding a second in the 21st. Palace responded each time Jean-Philippe Mateta equalised from the penalty spot in the 17th minute, before Ismaila Sarr levelled again in the 77th.
In the shootout, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, and Harvey Elliott missed their spot-kicks, while Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai converted. For Palace, Mateta, Sarr, and Justin Devenny found the net, with Eberechi Eze and Boma Sosa failing to score.
The victory marks a major triumph for Oliver Glasner’s side ahead of the new season.
