Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has called on Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to resign, apologise to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and support the acquisition of a new presidential jet.
In a social media post on Monday, August 18, 2025, Rev Fordjour accused Mr. Ablakwa and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of engaging in what he described as “petty politics” over presidential travels.
“Mr Principle, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana is expecting your resignation. NDC must apologise to Ghanaians and Prez Akufo-Addo for doing petty politics with presidential travels,” he wrote.
Rev Fordjour argued that the ongoing debates around the state of the presidential aircraft had been reduced to political point-scoring, ignoring the more critical concern of safety and security of the Head of State.
He maintained that national interest should take precedence over partisan considerations, insisting that the dignity and safety of the President during international duties were matters that should not be compromised.
“Government must be bold to submit a proposal for the acquisition of a new presidential jet for the President’s safety,” he urged.
His remarks follow renewed public discussions about the age and reliability of Ghana’s presidential jet, with critics questioning whether it remains fit for purpose.
The debate over presidential travels has been a long-running political flashpoint, with Ablakwa in particular known for challenging the cost and management of presidential trips during the Akufo-Addo administration.
Rev Fordjour, however, insists that the time has come for all sides of the political divide to unite in ensuring that the office of the President is served by an aircraft that reflects both security standards and national dignity.
