The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has condemned the arrest of social media activist Daniel Adomako, popularly known as Sir Obama Pokuase, describing it as an act of political persecution.
Sir Obama was arrested on Wednesday, August 13, over the alleged circulation of images showing individuals brandishing illegally acquired weapons. According to the Ghana Police Service, the arrest was part of a joint intelligence-led operation with other security agencies aimed at dismantling illegal arms networks.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Mr. Mustapha alleged that the police were applying the law selectively, targeting NPP members while ignoring offences committed by individuals aligned with the opposition. He cited the July 11 rerun of elections in 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North, claiming that known thugs attacked Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson and another individual, Chris Loyd, but have not been arrested.
“These are known people and have even been identified, yet the police haven’t arrested a fly. Meanwhile, they have gone after others whose only offence was making a comment or two deemed inappropriate,” Mr. Mustapha said.
He further rejected the claim that Sir Obama Pokuase had brandished weapons, insisting the videos in question were already circulating online before Sir Obama reposted them.
“It cannot be established anywhere in the video that he was holding any weapon. Yet his home was ransacked, his door broken down, and heavily armed men arrested this harmless young man before taking him to the CID headquarters. Is this the democracy we are building?” he questioned.
Sir Obama was later granted GH¢50,000 bail with three sureties, but remains in police custody as the case continues.
