Black Queens defender Afi Amenyeku, fresh from winning bronze at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, has dedicated her medal to someone she calls her greatest source of strength and inspiration — her grandfather, Amenyeku Kojdo.
Speaking after the team’s return, Afi described her grandfather as more than just family, calling him her “rock, motivator, and biggest cheerleader” since the earliest days of her football journey. She said his constant words of encouragement kept her focused through the toughest moments of her career.
By placing the medal in his hands, the 24-year-old defender said she wanted to honour the unwavering love and support that helped shape her into the player she is today.
“This medal is for him,” Afi said with emotion. “Every bit of hard work I put in was inspired by his belief in me. I wouldn’t be here without him.”
The Black Queens’ third-place finish in Morocco marks their first WAFCON medal in over a decade, and for Afi, sharing it with her grandfather has made the victory even more meaningful.
