Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has visited President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama at the Jubilee House to express his condolences and solidarity following Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash. The meeting was seen as a gesture of statesmanship and unity during a period of national mourning, as the former leader joined other Ghanaians in sharing in the grief of the moment.
Mr. Kufuor was received by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and other senior government officials, who conveyed their appreciation for his presence and support. His visit came just two days after the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter went down at Adansi Akrofrom in the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.
The crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Mr. Samuel Aboagye. Three military officers Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah also perished in the incident. The aircraft is reported to have gone off radar before crashing into a forested area and bursting into flames.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over the nation, prompting the President to order all national flags to be flown at half-mast in honour of the deceased. Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with Ghanaians united in mourning the loss of distinguished public servants and dedicated military personnel.
