The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has amended its statutes to extend the maximum term of office for its president, vice presidents, and Executive Council members from two to three terms. The decision was ratified during the Association’s 31st Ordinary Congress held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo told delegates that the change to Article 37.4 was made to align Ghana’s football governance with FIFA’s model. Under the revised statute, the president, vice presidents, and Executive Council members will each serve a four-year term, with the possibility of serving up to three terms whether consecutive or not.
“The mandate of the president, the vice presidents, and members of the Executive Council shall be for four years,” the amendment states. “Their mandate shall begin immediately after the Congress at which they are elected and expire at the Congress at which their successors are elected. No person may serve as president for more than three terms of office, whether consecutive or not. All other members, including any vice president, may serve no more than three terms of office, whether consecutive or not.”
The change means officials can now remain in their roles for up to 12 years if re-elected, replacing the previous eight-year cap and bringing the GFA in line with international football governance standards.
