A sombre wreath-laying ceremony was held on Thursday, August 7, at the Ceremonial Garden of Jubilee House to honour the eight individuals who perished in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash an event that has plunged the country into mourning.
The ceremony, part of the government-declared three-day national mourning period, brought together grieving family members, senior government officials, military leaders, and members of the public in a unified show of remembrance and national solidarity.
Among the victims remembered were Minister for Defence Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, and former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.
The fallen military crew Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah were also honoured for their service and sacrifice.
As wreaths were laid in silence, a solemn air enveloped the grounds, reflecting the depth of the nation’s grief. Speakers at the event reflected on the lives and legacies of the deceased, commending their dedication to public service and national development.
The official mourning period will continue through Saturday, August 9, culminating in an “Evening of Reflections and Memorials” to be held at the Forecourt of the State House.
