The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has halted a proposed 20% increase in public transport fares following discussions with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The suspension comes amid public outcry and criticism over the absence of wider stakeholder consultation before the planned fare hike.
On Tuesday, August 5, Road Transport Operators had announced a 20% fare increase set to take effect nationwide from Friday, August 8, 2025. The adjustment was to cover shared taxis, intra-city trotros, intercity services, and haulage transport under the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares.
However, in a statement released on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the transport union confirmed the decision to suspend the fare increase and continue enforcing the existing 15% fare reduction.
“Transport Operators have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision,” the statement said.
All operators have been instructed to uphold the 15% reduction in fares that has been in place since May 24, 2025.
