The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended operations of three radio stations operated by Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, citing breaches of Ghana’s broadcasting regulations.
The affected stations—95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi—were found to have committed multiple infractions, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and broadcasting from unapproved transmitter sites.
The suspension follows the expiration of a 30-day amnesty period granted by President John Dramani Mahama, which was intended to give defaulting stations an opportunity to rectify their regulatory violations. According to the NCA, Wontumi Multimedia failed to fully comply within the given window.
The authority enforced the suspension under Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), which prohibits any broadcasting operation without a valid Certificate of Compliance.
In addition to Wontumi Multimedia’s stations, six other radio outlets across the country were also shut down for failing to correct similar infractions during the grace period.
The NCA reiterated its commitment to ensuring all FM stations operate in line with licensing requirements and national broadcasting laws, adding that it will intensify monitoring of the sector to maintain regulatory integrity.
Meanwhile, Mr. Appiah-Kubi, legal representative for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has called for dialogue between the NCA and Wontumi Multimedia to resolve the impasse.
Speaking after the suspension, Mr. Appiah-Kubi acknowledged the need to adhere to regulatory standards but urged a collaborative approach to address any outstanding issues.
“I think there’s a need for us to comply with the directive. We have to meet the requirements under the law, and that is what the regulator expects us to do,” he stated.
“Granted that the expectations were not met, I think there’s a need for us to engage and see where the shortfalls are and do as much as we can to fulfil the expectations and get back to normalcy.”
Wontumi Multimedia is owned by Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
