Professor Raymond A. Atuguba, former Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, has been appointed Acting Director of Legal Education at the General Legal Council (GLC), effective September 1, 2025.
The appointment follows a directive from Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie recalling Justice B.Y.K. Oppong of the Court of Appeal from the role to resume full judicial duties.
In a letter dated August 8, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie expressed appreciation to Justice Oppong for his “significant contribution” to professional legal education, adding that a search committee will soon be constituted to select a substantive Director.
“I wish to thank you for the significant contribution you made to professional legal education during your time as Director of Legal Education,” the Acting Chief Justice noted.
Professor Atuguba’s appointment comes at a time of growing public debate over reforms in Ghana’s legal education system, with calls for expanded access to the Ghana School of Law, upgraded infrastructure, and a modernised curriculum.
