Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is set to sign a two-year deal with Spanish club Villarreal, following the expiration of his contract with the Gunners in June. The 32-year-old Ghana international has successfully undergone a medical and is expected to stay at Villarreal until 2027. A key factor influencing his decision was the opportunity to continue playing Champions League football.
Partey leaves Arsenal after making 167 appearances and scoring nine goals, having joined the Premier League side from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for €50 million. In the 2024–25 season alone, he featured 52 times, playing both in midfield and occasionally at right-back. Despite discussions with Arsenal about a contract extension, no agreement was reached.
However, Partey’s move comes amid serious legal challenges. On July 4, he was charged with five counts of rape and one of sexual assault allegations he strongly denies. The charges stem from an investigation that began in February 2022, during which he continued to play for Arsenal. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on August 5.
While Villarreal are yet to officially confirm the signing, the club appears set to welcome a player with significant experience at the top level but also one who will face legal scrutiny in the months ahead.
